Advanced Neonatal Life Support

The Advanced Neonatal Life Support (ANLS) Provider Course is the evidence-based Neonatal Resuscitation Program designed by the American Academy of Pediatrics in association with the American Heart Association for healthcare professionals whose responsibilities may require them to manage or participate in the resuscitation of a newborn.

Candidates will be able to perform the initial steps in neonatal resuscitation and appropriately use resuscitation devices for neonatal ventilation. Participants will be able to demonstrate the techniques of chest compressions, endotracheal intubation and the use of medications at birth. Candidates will have an understanding of special considerations at birth, including preterm infants, ethics and care at the end of life.

ANLS is a practical, case-based neonatal resuscitation program that will enhance one’s skills in the evaluation and management of a newborn at birth. Ideal performance is initially demonstrated via video and Instructor. Learning is facilitated by extensive hands-on practice, with each candidate getting several opportunities to participate in simulated clinical scenarios, guided by positive and constructive feedback.

Assessment and Preparation:

A comprehensive self-study program is contained in the 328-page American Academy of Pediatrics Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation which is supplied prior to ANLS Course participation. Participants must be in possession of an American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider Certificate. Candidates will receive a Resuscitation Council of Southern Africa and South African Paediatric Association Advanced Neonatal Life Support Certificate upon successful completion of the Course.
